James O’Barr is an American comic book writer and artist best known as the creator of The Crow, a landmark gothic revenge comic that became a cultural touchstone in comics, film, and alternative art. Born January 1, 1960, O’Barr developed The Crow in the early 1980s as a deeply personal work inspired by the tragic loss of his fiancée to a drunk-driving accident. The series was first published by Caliber Press in 1989 before being collected and expanded by Kitchen Sink Press, gaining widespread acclaim for its raw emotional honesty, stark black-and-white art, and fusion of punk, gothic, and noir influences.

O’Barr’s artwork is known for its expressive, high-contrast style—combining heavy shadows, scratchy linework, and intense, often brutal imagery that reflects themes of grief, love, vengeance, and redemption. The Crow went on to inspire multiple film adaptations, beginning with the influential 1994 movie, as well as sequels, novels, and spin-off comics, cementing O’Barr’s creation as a lasting pop-culture icon.

Beyond The Crow, James O’Barr has worked on numerous other comics and illustrations, including Deadworld, Skinning the Wolves, Curare, and various anthology and cover projects. He is also an accomplished painter and mixed-media artist, frequently exhibiting original art and appearing at comic conventions where he is known for candid discussions about art, loss, and the creative process. O’Barr remains a respected and influential figure in comics, particularly within the horror and gothic genres, with The Crow enduring as one of the most emotionally resonant independent comics of all time.

Jason Kimbrell is an unapologetic overthinker with a wildly active imagination, and just a touch of endearing quirk. A seventh generation Sacramentan, he grew up surrounded by California’s rich Gold Rush history. This, along with his fascination for world mythology, philosophical dialogue, and timeless archetypes, set him on the unexpected road to authorship.
Known for his encyclopedic knowledge of the random and weird, Jason crafts stories that probe the human condition while blending hard edged reality with imaginative depth. What began as a simple mindfulness journal soon unraveled into a sprawling world of gritty dark adventure, culminating in his debut noir-fantasy novel, The Knightstick Chronicles, Rough Justice.
When he’s not on the keyboard, you’ll likely find him camping with his lovely wife and two daughters, catching a flick at the theater, nose deep in his latest obscure fascination, or wrestling with his dogs in the backyard.
